On stage was the creator of those new sounds: Charles “Yardbird” Parker. In the crowd was the 16-year-old who would someday bring Parker’s extraordinary story to the screen: Clint Eastwood. “Americans don’t have any original art except Western movies and jazz,” observes Eastwood. Movie fans, of course, know that few heroes sit as tall in the saddles as Eastwood. Now the legendary America icon, whose Dirty Harry films have been praised for their jazz scores, ventures deeper into that other original American art. Eastwood produces and directs Bird, a film burnished with the magic of that 1946 concert encounter between legend and future legend and honored with an Academy Award for Best Sound in its spellbinding recreation of a man and his music. Like jazz itself, Bird rings with counterpoints and embellishments. Past and future overlap as the film explores Yardbird’s soaring skill and destructive excesses. Forest Walker (Good Morning Vietnam, The Color of Money), in his Cannes Film Festival Best Actor performance, is a candle ablaze at both ends as Parker. Diane Venora (Wolfen, Ironweed, F/X) shares that glorious light, winning the New York Film Critics Circle Best Supporting Actress Award for her portrayal of steadfast wife Chan Parker. For Bird’s wall-to-wall-to-everywhere digitally-processed Surround Stereo soundtrack, Eastwood went to the source: Parker’s recordings (including cuts never before released). Backgrounds were electronically eliminated. These parker “solos” were then rerecorded with accompaniment by modern musicians attuned to Yardbird’s bold improvisations. Roger and Me is a loose, smart-alecky documentary directed and narrated by Michael Moore, an everyman host with a devastating wit and a working-class pose. When his hometown is devastated by the plant closure of an American corporate giant (making record profits, one should note), the hell-raising political commentator with a prankster streak tries to turn his camera on General Motors Chairman Roger B. Smith, the elusive Roger of the title, and the film is loosely structured around Moore’s odyssey to track down the corporate giant for an interview.

While Moore ambushes his corporate subjects like a blu-collar Geraldo Rivera, a gurrilla interviewer who treasures his comic rebuffs as much as his interviews, his portraits of the colorful characters he meets along the way can be patronizing. The famous come off as absurdly out of touch (Anita Bryant appears for some can-do cheerleading, and hometown celebrity Bob Eubanks tells some boorish jokes), and the disenfranchised poor (notably an unemployed woman who sells rabbit meat to make ends meet) all too often appear as buffoons or hicks. But behind his loose play with the facts and snarky attitude is a devastating look at the victims of downsizing in the midst of the 1980s economic boom. This portrait of Reagan’s America and the tarnish on the American dream comes down to a simple qustion: what is corporate America’s responsibility to the country’s citizens? Carol White (Julianne Moore) is a mousy housewife living the afflunt life in the San Fernando Valley when, over the span of a few months, she begins to develop debilitating sensitivities to her environment. A permanent at the hair salon makes her nose bleed and her skin go bad, exhaust from a truck causes her to cough violently, she’s allergic to the new couch, goes into seizures at the dry cleaner’s. No one understands or credits her condition, least of all her husband or family physician. But the symptoms worsen, and Carol eventually discovers others who suffer from similar environmental illnesses. She checks into a desert spa that caters to those in her predicament, and the staff regales her with touchy-feely, infomercial-style affirmations. All of this could have been broad satire, but director Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine) opts for a filming style that captures the empty elegance of Carol’s passive lifestyle and looks on with clinical dispassion, so that you can hear the oppressive quiet surrounding her. It’s positively eerie, so you know you’re not watching just a worthy cause picture or movie of the week. Haynes has more ambition than that, even going so far as to insert a slight buzzing sound in the soundtrack to accentuate the unease. Fluorescent lights? Power lines? Who knows? Maybe it’s safe to call it the ominous rumblings beneath the surface of Carol’s life, from antiseptic afflunce to septic isolation in the spa environment. Imagine if an actor’s director like Eric Rohmer–whose films consist almost entirely of conversation between pairs or small groups of people–made a film that incorporated elements from movies like Dark City, eXistenZ, The Thirteenth Floor, The Truman Show, and Total Recall. The result might resemble Alejandro Amenabar’s remarkable second feature, Open Your Eyes, which favors ideas over effects and offers twist upon twist with mind-warping agility. This film rewards multiple viewings, pushing the viewer toward one perception of reality, then switching to another until reality itself is called into qustion. Melodrama, love story, and psychological thriller combine with a dash of science fiction, forming a plot that is both disorienting and deceptively precise.

Set in Madrid, the story defies description, but this much can be revealed: young, handsome Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) is vain, rich, charming, and–following a botched suicide-murder scheme by a jilted lover–horribly disfigured. He’d fallen in love with Sofia (Penelope Cruz) but is now an embittered husk of his former self, stuck in a “psychiatric penitentiary” on a murder charge and hiding behind an expressionless mask. His reality has crumbled, but as the film’s agenda is gradually revealed, we realize that there are other factors in play. Exposing that agenda would be a criminal offense against those who haven’t seen the film; suffice it to say that Open Your Eyes takes you into the twilight zone and beyond, and does so cleverly enough to prompt Tom Cruise to produce and star in an English-language remake, Vanilla Sky. The 2001 remake, directed by Cameron Crowe, costars Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz, who reprises her original role. –Jeff Shannon
